To enter a pot someone else have opened before you, you need a better hand than you need to open yourself from his position. If someone opened from middle position you need a early position opening hand to raise him.
Pot Odds and Implied Pot Odds.
Like all gamblers and investors, a good poker player is constantly trying to make good bets at favorable odds. Players who understand how to apply odds in a poker game will have a significant advantage over most of their opponents. Pot odds is the relationship between the current pot to the current bet. If the pot is 60 and you must bet 10, your pot odds are 6-1. Implied pot odds is the relationship between the current pot + the bets you expect to win, to the current bet.
If you have a nut flush draw with one card to come and you are last to act, calculating your odds are relatively easy. If you hit your flush you will win. If you don’t you will lose. 9 cards gives you the flush. There is 46 cards left in in the deck. 9 winners 37 losers. Your odds against hitting is 37 to 9 or a little more than 4 to 1. Now the pot odds. It is 50 in the pot and it will cost you 10 to call. Your pot odds is 5 to 1. Should you call? yes, when the pot odds are higher then your odds against winning, your odds are favorable. The call will make you money in the long run. Your implied odds are even better. If you hit your flush you can probably make some more money on the river. Perhaps 10 or 20 more on average then your implied pot odds will be 6 to 1 or 7 to 1. Calculating pot odds must be automatic and routine for you if you want to be a successful poker player.
