Manipulating your opponent
An important skill in no limit Holdem is to manipulate your opponent. In a tight game with solid players it’s hard to make any money if you play tight. To win big you have to manipulate your opponents into making big mistakes. One strategy to use is to make cheap errors to manipulate your opponents into making costly ones. What you can do is start playing bad and provoke your opponents into loosen up their game. If you and your opponents have been playing tight for some time you can make a really big pre flop raise with a hand like 7-2 off. Since your opponents are tight they will probably fold and you show them your 7-2. This is not good poker but it will make your opponents angry and perhaps more willing to call your good hands in the future. You can re raise pre flop with hands like 6-4 suited and if you hit you will win a very big pot and make your opponents believe you are an idiot.
If you start making plays like this your tight opponents will start by folding, but soon they realize they are being taken advantage of. They resolve to “take a stand” by lowering their standards and starts calling or raising your bets. And when you hit a big hand you are now in a very good position to take their money.
This is not an easy way to play poker and it takes a lot of experience and judgement to know when to continue with a bluff and when you should back off. But if you learn to play this loose aggressive type of poker well, you will be a big winner.
