It’s a lot of peoples dream to become a full time poker pro. And there is actually tens of thousands of people round the world who are playing poker more or less full time. I am one of them. The last five years online poker has been my main source of income.
Most of the time it’s been a great job but when the cards are running bad for long periods its not that fun anymore. And even if you win good money it can become very boring to play poker for 40 hours a week.
If you take poker seriously, study the game and have some talent for it, you will win money in the long run. For most good players its possible to win $30-$50 per hour. If you play 40 hours a week and makes $40 per hour you will make $75000 a year. This is ok money but in the long run it’s not enough.
You have to make more money in the long run, and that’s actually very hard. You have to move up to limits where you are playing against other full time pros, and you have to be better than them.
You have to be extremely talent to win enough money to justify a career as a poker player. And most poker players don’t have the talent it takes, they ends up making to little money. They get bored of playing poker and they starts taking to big risks. And sooner or later they go broke and have to quit playing poker. There are lots of people who leave their jobs and take a shot at being a professional, only to go broke and return to their jobs.
I believe its much better for most players who dreams of playing full time, to start playing part time. To have another job or business besides poker is a good thing in many ways. When you are running bad or when you are tired of poker you have something else to concentrate on. And another income makes it much easier to deal with the income swings from poker. You will also get more respect from other people outside the poker community, not everybody thinks playing poker is an acceptable job.
It took me years to find out that I needed a business besides poker, but now when I have that I feel much better about playing poker. I play better and win more money per hour when I don’t have to play so much. I can choose the best games and only play when I really feel for it. Now it’s fun to play poker again.
My advice to everybody who thinks of become a full time poker player is to not just quit your job. Make sure you can keep the job part time or start some other part time business. If you are one of the few really talented players you will win enough money anyway and if you are just semi good like me, it is a much better way to be successful.
