How big bankroll do you need?

First you have to ask yourself one question: are you sure that you are a consistent winner?
If the answer is no then your bankroll should be the amount that you are willing to loose when playing poker for fun, or when you are learning to play winning poker.
If you are a winning player the following bankrolls should be enough to prevent you from going broke.
Fixed limit
For fixed limit Texas Holdem a reasonable bankroll should be at least 300 times the big blind.
In 7-card stud the swings are bigger and you need more money, 500 times the big blind is reasonable.
No Limit
To play Texas Holdem No limit you need at least 30 times the maximum buy in for the table. The maximum buy in are often 100 times the big blind so compared to the big blind the required minimum bankroll is 3000 times.
Tournaments
If you play multi table tournaments live or online your standard deviation will be very big. You need money to buy in to lots of tournaments since it will be long periods without any prize money. To play multi table tournaments a reasonable minimum bankroll could be 150 times the average buy in.
It don’t have to be a mistake to play with a smaller bankroll than I recommend here, but if you are you have to be aware of that the risk that you will go broke will be relatively big.
To reduce the risk of going broke when playing with a small bankroll you can use a stop loss. After losing a certain amount of your bankroll you have to stop playing for that day or week and when you start playing again the next day or week you have to go down in blinds and play in a smaller game.
